Rhythm 4 All

This is my first posting on here. Yay!

Since the Covid-19 pandemic has forced all of us online, I have been leading all of my drum circles, classes, and rhythm events in the virtual world. When I first was told I would need to do this, like many others, I felt overwhelmed and resistant to the idea of trying to make music online. But eventually, when I saw there was no way around it, I gradually came to embrace it. Now that I’ve had about 9 months of experience leading groups on Zoom, I feel much more confident and see some exciting possibilities with it.

One group that I most look forward to facilitating is a virtual weekly rhythm and movement circle for youth with developmental disabilities and their families in San Francisco called “Rhythm 4 All.” (hosted by Support 4 Families, a wonderful SF org).

The joy and energy that each participant and their families bring bursts through the screen. The event is a safe and encouraging space for the youth to express themselves from the safety of their homes with their loved ones drumming along with them. Each family gets a few moments to be spotlighted and express their unique creativity for the group to see. Some have ridiculous dance moves. Some create instruments from kitchen utensils. There is always an abundance of laughter, creativity, encouragement, and celebration.

Many parents report how meaningful it is for their kids to have the opportunity to be seen, to shine, and be successful at something in front of their community. Some of these families wouldn’t be able to easily attend this circle every week if it were in person. I am grateful that each and every week, despite all the obstacles of accessibility and technology, this group gets to create a genuine feeling of connection and community in a virtual space.
